Scarlet Poppies | Original Oil Mixed Media Painting

Scarlet Poppies is an original oil mixed media painting where brilliant red and coral flowers rise through a darker, tangled garden beneath an open turquoise sky.

The contrast is what gives this painting its energy. Strong scarlet blooms emerge against deep greens and shadow while a butterfly brings a lighter moment of movement through the flowers.

Some areas are richly developed and textured while others remain loose and expressive, allowing the garden to move between realism and abstraction.

Amanda’s Inspiration

Poppies can look incredibly fragile, yet they have a strength that fascinates me. In fact, I have painted 1000s of poppies over the past 20 years. This is by far a favourite!

I love how their petals can appear almost translucent in sunlight, but the colour is impossible to ignore.

With Scarlet Poppies, I wanted to keep some of the darker passages underneath rather than making the entire garden bright. For me, the deeper colours make the illuminated flowers feel even more alive.

It became a painting about contrast. Light against shadow. Delicacy against strength. A moment of vivid colour rising from tangled growth.

It belongs to The Living Garden, a collection inspired by the movement, abundance and interconnected life found in nature.
